jet lag is not your friend

Have you been wondering what we've been up to?

Besides neglecting our blog and taking poor quality, blurry pictures of ourselves?

We went back to the states for Christmas just in time to catch a nasty flu virus. Luckily we were all healthy on Christmas (we had a 48 hour window of peace).

We got back to Thailand a few days ago. We got to our house around 2 AM and Rocky left for Malaysia at 4 AM. Needless to say, I've been walking around all day in my pajamas, in a complete haze and going to bed at 6:30 pm. He got back last night around 9 pm, not that I know the time as I was already well into my second rem cycle.

Eliot handles jet lag like she handles everything else. As long as she gets a bowl of cereal at some point in the middle of the night, she's fine. Well, besides that she keeps moving from bed to bed wetting all of them. No bed is safe. I wet to the store today and bought her some pull ups--something I probably should have done a few days ago. Though now that I think about it, maybe she's just marking her territory.

Vi  doesn't do as well (with jet lag or wetting the bed). She prefers to spend a few hours awake roaming around the house doing her signature "raise the roof" move and getting into all the toys Eliot doesn't let her play with. With this as her reward for getting up in the middle of the night, she may never get her days and nights right.

As we were driving home from the airport in Bangkok Eliot said, "When me in Thailand me miss Utah, when me in Utah me miss Thailand." This is true but it's a lot easier to live in Thailand when its 75 degrees here and 6 degrees in Utah. I'll revisit that idea in April when it's 75 degrees in Utah and the same temperature as the face of the sun in Thailand.

Here are some other quotes from our holiday:

After reviewing the safety brochure on the airplane, Eliot told me, "If our airplane lands in the water, put your life jacket on first before you put them on your kids."

um ok

After our first flight (SLC to LAX) Eliot brightly announced, "Only two flights left! That not too long!" I envy her enthusiasm but at that moment it took a lot of strength not to crush her soul and explain we still had over twenty hours--a whole day and a whole night left and with Rocky sick with the flu, I was left as the anchor of our team.

Luckily, both girls did pretty great (thanks to Vi being locked in her carseat) and our plane didn't land in the water. I don't know if they're getting better at flying or if I'm starting to care less about them crying in front of people. Either way it's a win-win for me. The results aren't so clear for the rest of the people on the plane...

While riding in the car the other day Eliot told me, "Mom, when me grow up me want to be a Jew artist."
"A what?"
"A Jew artist."
(A few days before she had brought home a picture of a menora and requested we get one of those like a boy in her class, but it still seemed like this interest in Hebrew art was coming out of left field.)
"An artist of what?"
"Of Jews, Mom! Of of diamonds and stones."
"Oh, a jewel artist."
"Yeah, but only when I'm not a 'mumble mumble'."
"A what?"
"You know, a scientist of dinosaurs."
"Oh, a paleontologist."
"Yeah me going to be a paleontologist and a Jew artist."
"Jewel artist?"
"That what me said!"
"Just checking."

And yet Eliot insists Violet is the funniest one in our family. "Mom, Biolet is so funny!"She usually says this while squeezing her or poking her in the face. Which, I get the feeling, Vi no longer finds funny anymore.
