boombox

What do you get the girl that only ever wants to play games? (who's parents just might possibly need an occasional break from games.) This was the dilemma we were faced with at Christmas. We decided to go out on a limb and get her a CD player. Did you know those still existed? They do.

She loves music.

Someday when she's a famous scientist or just a non incarcerated adult, it will make a great story about how she learned to read and write by searching for her favorite songs on iTunes. (Maybe I should wait to see how she pans out before sharing or recording that little tidbit. )

"Kiss the Girl" from The Little Mermaid

Not only has she memorized the letters in her favorite song titles for faster searching, she also has most the lyrics memorized. After Hannah spent a month with us, she had a crash course introduction to Weezer that she is finally surfacing from. She loves to be the DJ in the car and has even made her own playlists on my phone. Though we did find it necessary to institute a no repeats rule.

In hopes of steering her towards some more age appropriate music, we gave her a few CDs for her to listen to at night. We assumed she would alternate them. Our mistake, the playlists above should have been a clue that she has a tendency to fixate. For the month of January it was only Peter and the Wolf. Since then it has only been Disney's Hits. Some of these hits are better known ones like, Kiss the Girl or Lion King. Some are some pretty deep track, I'm not sure how they classify as "hits". "I Love the Monkey's Uncle" and "The Ugly Bug Ball" are two of her favorites and have been added to the Violet Mix.

One a side note,  the Disney CD has also led my kids to think every song has a movie behind it. Violet is constantly asking which movie this song or that song is from. Winston told me today for his movie night choice he is going to choose the Brass Monkey movie (think Beastie Boys--also not age appropriate) according to him this movie is about a monkey driving crazy fast. After close examination of the lyrics, I think it would more likely be about a barroom brawl, date rape or both.
But back to the boombox gift. It was a slam dunk. She loves it. She carries it around everywhere. Well, everywhere within 1-2 feet of an outlet. I can't help but think of this every time I see her walking into a new room to set it up and play us her new favorite song:

When she gets mad, she goes up to her room and blasts "I Just Can't Wait to be King". I can never decide if I am Mufasa or Scar in this scenario, but I don't feel like things end well for either of them.
I guess I've been warned.
