Last Friday, Bangkok had a Royal Barge Procession down the Chao Phraya River. According to Wikipedia it's a religious and royal tradition that has been happening for 700 years. During the present King's reign of 60 years, it's only occurred 16 times.
Amy and I braved the heat/rain and took the kids to soak up some (apparently, much needed) Thai culture. On the drive over, Mary pointed out all the "Thai" things to Elie (i.e. Thai house, pictures of the Thai King, Thai flags). We got there 1-2 hours early (we thought we were one hour early but it was two hours before any boats passed us) luckily there was rotti, pineapple, binoculars and flags to be bought close by. We had front row seats.
It started to sprinkle, so I did all these people a favor and bought myself an umbrella, the rain immediately stopped.
Due to health reasons the King was not able to attend but his son, the Crown Prince, was there we weren't sure which barge was his but we think the one with the throne looks important.
Turns out 52 barges is a lot.
It was great. If I doing November thankful posts, I would probably say something like, I'm thankful for the opportunity to live in a country which such rich culture.
I asked E on the way home what her favorite part was, she told me, "When me see all the Thai 'fings." As in, all the Thai houses and billboards and other things she's surrounded by all the time.
Maybe I should start pointing those things out to her whenever we go anywhere, "Look Elie, it's a Thai sidewalk! And that's a Thai door!"

That looks so cool!
I am so jealous that you are getting to see all those "Thai fings."
That's neat you guys are there for it! Those are great pics too. I agree with Darrell.
It's hard to believe you are seeing all the things you do. Thanks for sharing. That is a lot of barges.
