don't worry, pink is a boy color

When we found out we were having a baby girl 5+ years ago Rocky was a little concerned. He said he wasn't quite sure what to do with a girl. When we found out Vi was a girl, he was excited. When we found out Winston was boy, Rocky swears he was actually disappointed. I kept trying to call his bluff and he kept sticking to his story, "I really wanted to have three girls. I think it would have been really fun".

We haven't actually experienced having a boy, yet. People keep asking me excitedly, "So, are you enjoying having a boy?" I think they're a little disappointed/confused at my flat response, "I keep thinking he's a girl."

There have been many (well most) times in the night when he's woken up and I've rolled over thinking, "She's awake again". This may also happen occasionally during the day, but let's not go into details with how often. We're just used to girls. We have them (to a point) figured out.

After E was told she had a boy name, we started throwing around the motto, "boys toys/colors/names can be girls toys and girls toys can be boys toys" but we're well aware our girls gravitate towards certain pink and princessy things. Sure our almost two year old has been sleeping in the same Thomas the Train pajamas every night since she got them three weeks ago, alongside her sleeping companions: James, Percy, new Thomas with eyebrows, old Thomas with no eyebrows. But she tucks them into bed with a spare napkin at the dinner table and whispers, pointing, "Shh baby Thomas."We own enough dress ups to clothe a small country but anything that is long enough to be considered a princess dress gets four times the use. And everyone always needs a necklace and a handbag--human or stuffed animal.

So really, we're still trying to get our minds around the idea of a boy.
Rocky painted the girls nails this morning. This has always been his job and he gets really excited when he has a new color of polish--kind of like a 12 year old girl. In return, he got his toenails painted. E assured him she was using a "boy pink color".

I am quite interested to see how the new father/son dynamic plays out. So far the main bonding activity has been sleeping.

Apparently, Rocky is much better at bathing him. On one particularly tricky and stressful evening when I was bathing the kids, Eliot pointed out, "How come when you bath Winston he cries a lot but when Dad bathes him he doesn't ever cry?"

I remember the first time I noticed Rickers painted toe nails when Regan and I started dating. Although Rachel and Roxanne got a little more wild than pink, every toenail would be a different color. I thought it was a little weird but as time went on I thought it was pretty cute that Ricker would allow it. Like father like son I guess. All these pics of Rocky are making me want a nap! Miss you guys.

Rocky will have him doing manly things soon enough. Fortunately, he's young enough still that he doesn't have to "man up" yet.

Love this post! Can't believe I missed it before I left. Missing all of you so much! What a cute picture of Winston too. I just worry some "guys" might take that fingernail polish the wrong way?
