Winston loves vacations because it involves a lot of being held.
Violet has recently crossed the rubicon and is a huge beach fan. On my list of milestones I look forward to most, I would place 'beach love' pretty high up there. Probably right below 'ability to watch movies for 5+ hours straight'. (Judge away.)
The beach is always better with friends.
Those friends become quite vital when you take your 5 year old for a kayak ride and just as your turning around the distant island to come back, you kayak fills up with water. Luckily. Rocky was able to pass off Eliot to our friend who rowed her back for shore, grabbed a rope and went back for Rocky and the partially submerged kayak.
I watched the whole thing with my long range lens, reporting on how many people I could see, "Now there are two people rowing." "Now I can only see one person."
and finally. "Uh, now I see no people." At which point I went to the kayak desk and told them, "Kayak broken, far away, need help." They stared at me confused for a while and asked where the kayak was, I then pointed out to the ocean.
About 10 minutes later these guys came out. In retrospect I feel that maybe I should have asked for help 30 minutes before when I first found out. Though Rocky assures me he was 0% worried and they eventually made it back to shore all on their own.
All in all, if this is a test of our travel abilities for the upcoming journey back to the states, I would say it should be an easy trip.
As long as we only bringing the five year old.
